Some Gems – Some Clunkers, August 6, 2009

First let me preface this by saying I haven’t worked through (or even attempted to install) all of the games yet. As the previous reviewer noted, there “appear” to be some Vista issues, but let’s be accurate about it. Black Buccaneer has a dependency in the .NET Framework V1.1, and yes Vista will warn you there are compatibility issues. But you can, should you wish, choose to ignore the warning and it will probably install. I chose to install it on an XP VM I keep specifically for gaming so I can’t say for certain that it will run under Vista, but I see no reason to expect otherwise. I will likely use the XP VM when I get around to installing the rest.

Speaking of installs – What you actually receive is a FPP (1 DVD) for Cleopatra, and 4 DVD’s in an unmarked keeper case with a mini-cakebox spindle. Inside it are 2 DVD’s for Syberis II, 1 DVD for Black Bucanneer, and 1 DVD for the five remaining titles (none of which I’ve even attempted to install yet.)

I purchased this specifically to get Cleopatra and Syberia II – Looking at the other games as more or less a free bonus – And both install and run fine on Vista 64.

Cleopatra has incredible visuals, a very user friendly interface, a somewhat unique feature that randomizes your gameplay experience (choose a zodiac sign) but left me somewhat less than completely satisfied. Call it 3.5 on a 5 point scale. I’ve played many that were worse, some that were better, and lots that were about the same. I’m not a huge fan of adventure games that force you to save often in case you die, this is not one of those. There are also no time based challenges, so it was a real pleasure to just relax and take my time while working my way through the puzzles without having to worry if I made a mistake. The game easily lives up to, and perhaps exceeds, my review-based expectations.

I’m just starting Syberia II, but so far it’s a real Gem. Rich visuals, smooth gameplay, and atmosphere to spare. The game just begs to be played on a large screen with the room lights dimmed so as to allow complete immersion in the experience. The puzzles have enough challenge to keep a veteran adventure gamer occupied, and while I personally think you shuld play Syberia before starting the sequel, the game does stand on its own.

All in all I consider it $20 well spent, and if I enjoy even one of the remaining 6 games, I’ll consider it a very pleasant bonus.

If you’re into adventure games, you really can’t do much better than this. It’s an excellent collection of games for the price. I checked out some of these games at a store in my neighborhood, and many of them were right there on the shelf, being sold separately for the same price as this collection! This bundle is billed as having eight adventures. However, one of the games, AGON, actually includes 3 separate adventures. So you’re not getting eight adventures, you’re really getting TEN!!

A friend gave me a copy of Benoit Sokal’s Syberia some time ago – and that game was amazing . When I saw that this collection included two of Sokal’s later games, Syberia 2 and Paradise – I had to break it open and give it a try. No disappointment there. Syberia 2 was even better than the first – simply a masterpiece! The game blew me away with its realism, amazing graphics, and incredible script. Paradise, though not in the class as either installment from the Syberia series, is still worthy of strong praise with its story of an amnesiac trying to unravel the mystery of her identity in the fictitious African nation of Maurania – great acting and incredible graphics.

I’m really into ancient civilizations so Riddle of the Sphinx, Omega Stone, and Riddle of the Tomb were immediate favorites. Riddle of the Sphinx is a puzzle game, with a challenging mixture of easy and difficult puzzles. Omega Stone picks up where Riddle leaves off and is a stunning game visually, with beautiful 360-degree graphics. Riddle of the Tomb offers loads of puzzles to solve. Some are easy and some are difficult and the graphics are again excellent.

I can’t get over the fact that the collection is billed as having eight adventures, since AGON actually has three parts to itself. I have satisfied my adventure-mania for a while 🙂

I haven’t played Physicus or the Buccaneer game yet, but even if I never get around to them – I’ve already got more than my money’s worth with this purchase. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I don’t know what that review about not working on Vista is all about; but I have vista 64 bit and all the games installed and ran on my computer.
