I rarely write reviews, however I think Tropico 4 well deserved one. I’ve played this series since Tropico 2 and have been a fan of this series with many hours of game play. When Tropico 3 came out, it really blew me away. Graphics were insanely better than the predecessor and the game was more complex, yet still easy to understand and play. I held off on buying Tropico 4 til this past black Friday and it seems to be a mistake to do so for so long!

Yes the game play and graphics engine is pretty much the game as Tropico 3, however they made alot of positive changes to the game that made it much more enjoyable. More foreign powers, larger islands, new disasters, many minor new features such as quick rebuild that just solved alot of the pain in the **** stuff you had to deal with in Tropico 3. I admit though that I understand why alot of people didn’t like the original Tropico 4 release and that was because there really wasn’t enough major changes to really justify going out and spending 50 bucks at the time for the game. Its was would of made my review 3.5 stars. However the major addition is the Modern Times game added onto it. Many new buildings such as Bio Farms, Borehole mines, City parks, Telecom building, water treatment plants are only just the slight few to list. The best new building is the Metro Station. No more massive traffic jams when your island reaches large populations. Instead your people go to the nearest Metro Station and pop out to their destination almost instantly.

All of the new buildings pop up over the 50 year timeline and it makes the game very enjoyable to play over the entire 50 year period. In addition a new list of Edicts and your very own council of minsters. Had the Kalypso released these additions along with the original Tropico 4, they would of enjoyed the same success they had with Tropico 3.

Anyways I would give this game a 95 out of 100. I have very minor knocks in that the development team should have more variety of building selections in the Modern Times expansion. Ex. You only have 1 style selection of Modern Condos and Modern Apartments. Rather than the 4 different types of Regular Condos. Another I have is that you can’t build any of the old buildings once their new upgrades come through and it can be annoying. The upgrade I dislike is the Cathedral gets upgraded to a Glass Cathedral and the new building is massive. Hard to fit into already developed cities or smaller islands. Last, how about some more islands or at least give us a landscaping feature so we can make our own? Creating a exchange system like the Sims had would do the game wonders.

That said, this is a very enjoyable game and if you enjoy Tropico 3, then this is the same game just heavily upgraded and much more enjoyable. I highly recommend this combo pack.

    Quick review:
    – love the look and feel of the game
    – the game is a very fun sim-city-like island builder game
    – very addicting (first night up until 1:30 am)

    Negatives:
    – Game seems to kick out to Windows Desktop every 20 minutes or so. Was Hoping this does not keep doing this, but it does, and is really annoying.
    – There is some irritating repetitiveness regarding the tasks for each level.
