Tropico 3: Gold Edition - PC

FEATURED Tropico 3: Gold Edition – PC

  • Comprehensive campaign with 15 different missions
  • A variety of business sectors: Tourism, petroleum, mining, agriculture, etc.
  • A timeline editor allows you to create your own fictive historical events or enter real ones
  • Avatar function: Wander the island as El Presidente and change the course of play
  • Political speeches, edicts and “other” means of influence

The time is yesterday and the Cold War is in full swing. Through means devious and dubious you have seized power in the Caribbean island country of Tropico, where you now rule as the all-powerful “El Presidente”. You decide whether you want to use your army to secure your power base in the best traditions of corrupt, unscrupulous tyrants everywhere or lead your people to prosperity in your role as generous elder statesman. No matter whether you turn Tropico into a vacation paradise, a police state or a modern industrial nation – you will always have to defend your actions before your people! Wander through Tropico as El Presidente in order to intimidate political opponents, hold populist speeches or just to enjoy your country’s own Caribbean flair. Don’t forget to keep a sharp eye on the dangers and side-effects of your absolute power! Danger lurks on every corner, be it militant revolutionaries bent on installing a communist junta, or the machinations of the superpowers USA and the Soviet Union, both of whom would like to see a more amenable ruler in strategically important Tropico! History takes its course with events such as the Cuba crisis, papal visits and other actual decisive historical events. The only question is whether or not you can play a role in that history!

Have been a fan of ‘Tropico’ for years and love this version. Lots of new buildings and the graphics are very good. But it absolutely drives me nuts that I every time I start this game, I have to enter the 25 character product key, or code, to start playing. And that’s EVERY time. The game is loaded on a laptop that I never go on-line with, and it’s totally unconscionable that the software developers would it make it mandatory that I have to manually enter in this code to start the game. I could understand it if I was going on-line to play others, but that’s not the case. For that reason, I can only give it 4 stars. Once you enter in the code, that should unlock the game so you can play it any time you want.

Fun game for the current price (under $10), February 26, 2013

The game follows the same format as the original Tropico. You are the recently installed dictator of a small Caribbean island. Build stuff, make money, try to keep everyone happy. (see my Tropico review for more details)

The game installs without problems. You have to enter the code from the printed manual before you can start playing. You don’t have to go online.

    Changes from original game:

    2 new factions
    cars (have to build garages)
several new buildings (zoo, ferris wheel, city dump, etc.)
an annoying radio announcer who complains about everything you do
    some new edicts to issue

The major change is you now have an avatar to represent yourself. Select male or female, hair, outfit, glasses, etc. There is very limited customization. You have just one male or female body and face. There are a few options for hair style and outfits. (you keep the same outfit for 20 – 50 years or however long the scenario lasts) You can move yourself to a contruction site to speed up the workers, go to a factory to boost production, etc.

Overall it is a fun tycoon game. The current price (under $10) is reasonable. Play it too long and it gets repetitive but it is the type of game you can come back to and replay.

Note to the designers: In its current format there is not any reason to come out with another sequel. If you converted it to a role playing game with a truly customizable character (as in Oblivion) and a fully explorable 3D world, that would be a different story. Imagine going to the casino and gambling, decorating your palace, leading an expedition into the jungle to look for a lost Mayan city, or leading your armed forces on a raid of the rebels’ base – that could be a lot of fun. Highly detailed graphics wouldn’t be necessary, you could even have Roger Rabbit style toon characters.
