We purchased this game to commemorate our enjoyment of the equivalent ride at Walt Disney World in Orlando. We knew it wouldn’t live up to the ride of course and we expected to be kind of over the game quickly. But not nearly as quickly as we were.

First, the good. Disney/Pixar seems to have spent as much effort animating this game as they did the ride and from a programming standpoint I’m sure the myriad scoring combinations were very difficult to work out so this was probably not a cheap game to produce. Also, if you’re a newbie with the controller you’ll get good at moving the little target quickly which can translate into success in other games.

However, 90% of the games are the same game. Propel balls/hoops/pies/whatever at targets/aliens/critters/whatever and score points. Certain targets and combinations of targets release another set of higher-value targets. Oh and pies come at you which you “dodge” by leaning left or right. At the end of each game there’s usually a “frantic round” in which you can score a ton of points quickly with little effort — a great opportunity for adults to let the kids catch up. To an adult this quickly gets boring. Much more quickly than I anticipated. I guess if you’re fascinated by figuring out how the programmers set up the various scoring opportunities you might enjoy that but I suspect for most people this game is going to be a very expensive video ring toss.

The Kinect feature of this game was all but impossible for us to use and was boring in any event. All it does is allow you to hold your hands in front of you pretending to hold a launcher and steer it with your hands instead of the left stick of the controller. We found that tiny hand movements led to very large movements of the target indicator. There doesn’t appear to be a 3-D feature like on the Wii.

Finally, this game isn’t without its technical glitches. After just a couple days’ gameplay we noticed that the targets sometimes just randomly reset to somewhere on the screen.

If you’ve got young children who are in love with the Toy Story universe this might be a good addition to their collection somewhere around the $16.99 price point. But for most people and at the current price I cannot recommend this game.

Great game! This is our favorite attraction at DisneyWorld. So fun to be able to play on family game night in our home! Many evenings of family laughter and fun.
