Raid the Caribbean as a 17th-century pirate captain in this epic, open-ended seafaring adventure. Pirates! offers players the chance to take on the role of a privateer the inÃ?ƒâ⒬šÃ?â??Ã’Â Caribbean. From here, the game is pretty much up to you. You can get involved in trading, treasure hunting, ship fights, town assaults, duels and all manner of other activities. The game is wonderfully episodic and presents a variety of opportunities to the player based on context. You pick your nationality from Spanish, English, French and Dutch, a starting date, and a special talent, such as sword fighting or ship handling.

The Golden Age of railroads is back with Sid Meier’s Railroads! Combining the best of real-world and model railroads, Sid Meier’s Railroads! puts you in charge of building your own transcontinental empire. Not only must you learn to run everything from steam-powered locomotives to more modern diesel and electric trains, but you must also manage cargo and your bottom line, even as ruthless corporations, rival tycoons, slick entrepreneurs and robber barons try to take over. I originally got the Wii version of the Pirates game for my daughter, who wanted something more adventurous than her usual “girl” games. She liked the pirate game, and it was a good choice for her, but my husband tried it and started playing it all the time (so apparently it was a good choice for him, too). Eventually he asked me to order the PC version for him. He enjoyed playing it (and commented that there were both advantages and disadvantages of the PC version compared to the Wii version), but then he tried the Railroads game, and we haven’t seen him since. Other than playing simple online games, I’ve never known him to get into playing a video/computer game, but he is totally addicted to this thing, and it’s been a continuing draw for months. He even hooked up his computer to our big screen TV for better viewing.

If you like “empire-building” types of games, and especially if you like trains, you’ll probably love this game.

Pirates was my very first computer game, it came in a bundle with Railroad tycoon and a couple of lamer titles. (Rex Nebular & Command HQ)
They were great in there day. And now that they have been remade are much more exciting and enjoyable.

I love the open world of Pirates! This is the same game just with updated graphics, sounds and music. A classic example of “If there’s nothing wrong, don’t break it”.
Sailing around the Caribbean attacking enemy ships, fighting for a nation, sacking towns or just being a cold blooded pirate and attacking anything you wish. Is still just as fun as it was back in 1992. I give this a 9.5 out of 10. If only there was some form of multi-player.

As for Railroads its seen some well needed improvments. Its an easier game to play from the original making many of the tedious task easier and more automated. It is much more fun to play now building tracks and trains, moving materials and goods from place to place. Seeing your cities and industries grow as you profit and defeat your rivals is quite fun and addicting. It also has 4 player multiplayer that brings more challenges and competition to the game.

Both games will run on almost any PC built in the last four years. I have Pirates running on my netbook! Railroads requires slightly higher specs.

Getting both of these titles for fifteen bucks is a real steel. Especially if you haven’t played them before.
