FEATURED Great Planes Realflight G6 W/airplane Megapack Mode 2

  • Learn to fly without the cost of breakage from crashes

  • Over 120 Airplanes & Helicopters to choose from

  • Online combat versus other simulator owners

Realflight G6 is the latest release of on the the most realistic flight simulators available for radio controlled airplanes. It includes the simulator, USB Interlink Controller (Airplane Configuration – can be used to fly helis also), and the Airplane Megapack. It offers a wide range of realistic flying fields, water landings, obstacle courses – and even on-line combat against other players.

A simulator is an excellent way to learn to fly radio controlled airplanes. It will more than pay for itself because when you crash, instead of having to go buy replacement parts – you just click a button and get back in the air!

If you already own a compatible controller with a trainer port, you can connect it to the USB Interlink controller and use you own controller for real stick time.

Note: I wrote a very in-depth review for the RF6 Helicopter version. Both the helicopter and airplane megapack versions are about 99% identical, with the exception of a slightly different radio configuration (above channel 4) as well as respective aircraft count. With those basically being the only differences, I decided to post my review here as well, in order to give you as much information as possible on the RF6 RC flight simulator.

    What’s in the box:
You will receive the software CD containing over 80 aircraft and over 30 flying sites (fields), a very realistic 8 channel, mode 2 transmitter attached to a USB wire to plug into your computer. You’ll also get a couple of adaptor wires to use if you want to use your own Futaba or Spektrum transmitter, or to have two pilots fly for training or competition. Inside the CD case, you will find the manual. The manual seems a little vague, but useful. If you get the helicopter megapack, you will receive a second software CD that will contain an additional 45 helicopter models. If you get the airplane megapack, your additional software CD will contain an additional 35 airplane models.
Note: The radio for the helicopter version does not have the “ratchet” feel for the left (throttle/rudder) stick, but there is a ratchet spring included in the box if you wish to swap out the “smooth” feel of your throttle stick for the more common “ratchet” feel. Swapping this spring out takes a Phillips screwdriver and about five minutes. The radio for the airplane version has the ratchet spring already installed.

    What is Mode 2:
The software and radio are set up for “mode 2” pilots, which means for airplanes, the left stick is throttle and rudder, while the right stick is elevator and aileron. For helicopters, the left stick is throttle/collective (altitude up and down) and yaw (rotation), while the right stick is pitch (forward and reverse fly) and roll (left and right cyclic fly). Mode 1 radios would basically be the opposite. Mode 2 is the most common radio configuration for leisure and sport flyers in the United States, but mode 1 is generally most popular everywhere else in the world. Mode 2 is considered to be a much easier configuration to learn on for right handed flyers. Left handed flyers may find mode 2 more difficult, and wish to consider the mode 1 version, but that boils down to personal preference.

    Is it worth the money:
Yes! If you consider everything that you are getting above, and the fact that if you use this regularly, and gain skill from it, in time, you will save at least the cost of this simulator in repair costs of your aircraft. In other words, it will pay for itself. If you’re not an RC pilot and are simply looking for a “Game”, this may seem a bit pricey. Besides, there isn’t much “game” to it. It’s a skill honing sim, designed for pilots.

    Installing the software:
Is simple, but you must log on to your computer as “Administrator”… More on that below. All you have to do is place the CD in your computer’s drive and follow the instructions. It doesn’t get much easier than that. Be prepared to wait for about three to five minutes for full installation, maybe more, depending on the speed of your system, as you are loading about 5GB of information onto your computer’s hard drive. In response do a great question by one reader, RF6 does NOT require the CD to operate fully after installation. After installation, the CD should be removed from your drive and kept as a backup. Read the product description posted here to make sure you have the minimum requirements to use this software and its features. If you are still unsure if RealFlight 6 will work on your computer, simply visit the Realflight webpage at: Sorry, Amazon wont allow a URL, but if you go to “realflightDOTcom”, select “Downloads”, you can get the FREE RF6 demo. Bare in mind that the demo must also be downloaded and ran while logged on to your administrator account. You will have to use your keyboard to fly the included aircraft, but at least you will know if your system can handle the graphics and at least some of the features. If the RF6 demo will work on your computer, so will the full version. The free demo is about 300MB in size and can take a few minutes to download depending on your connection speed, so be patient.
Note: Make sure you have the latest greatest drivers for your graphics card. If you’re not sure what card or chipset you have or how old it is, here is a way to find out: Go to your start menu, click “Run command”. In the field, type: “Dxdiag” and hit enter. At this point, you may be asked if you want to display digitally signed updates (or something to that effect). If you see this window, click “yes”. If not, you will get a window that will have the following tabs: “System”, “Display”, “Sound 1” etc. Clicking the “Display” tab will bring up all the information you will need about your graphics card…
