This really takes basic solitaire above and beyond. I love all the layouts and different goals to beat certain ones, like ice walls or rose vines. I also love the cute, fairy graphics, much nicer on the eyes than plain old cards. The added pet element adds fun as well, reminding me somewhat of pokemon. You can find eggs under certain cards, hatch them, raise them and find certain gems to help them evolve. There are also certain bonuses you can save up funds to buy, like extra undos and power ups that work from cards you can’t use. I also liked the journey/adventure part of this. Each level has 9 levels you have to beat, and each level of nine has certain goals. Like completing X amoung perfectly, or earning X amount of $ or getting X amound of combos in a row. I really liked all these aspects as it made a whole new game out of solitaire, adding new challenges and making the replayability high and fun! Highly recommended to all!

Fun game but it could have been much more, September 20, 2010

Fairie Solitaire is an easy game to learn. The game consists of nine different boards or hands to complete in each level and nine different levels in each stage and I believe nine (at least eight) stages necessary to finish the game. You start off with a board of cards arranged any number of ways with some cards exposed, some not. The card closest to you is usually always shown. You flip over your cards one at a time. Based on your number you can take the card closest to you if it is one higher or lower, regardless of suit. You can then take the next higher or lower card, and so on. When you are unable to match any more cards you turn over your next card and continue until your deck is exhausted. The object is to remove all the cards from the board. Once completed, you get a “perfect” and you continue to the next board. Different objectives are needed for each level as you progress through the game. For example, instead of clearing the entire board, the objective may be to clear five-cards in a row. In normal mode these objectives are usually quite easy to complete but there are more challenging difficulties you can select.

A story unfolds, albeit excruciatingly slow, about saving little faerie damsels in distress. Usually there is only a sentence or two before you head off to the next level which doesn’t really draw the player into the game. There are also powerups you can purchase with the money you have accumulated by playing. It’s not clear if you get additional money for clearing a board in its entirety (a perfect) although you do see money added to your balance when you clear individual columns. Powerups include things like being able to destroy a card, seeing the number of cards you have left or getting additional money. The boards become increasingly difficult too. Some columns are locked up until you clear a different column entirely, other cards are frozen until you nab a “fire-card” to melt them, etc. These variations help keep the game challenging.

In addition to cash you will occasionally find rare items with each column you complete. An egg is a rare collectible that can hatch and grow to an adult using experience based on the time you spend playing. Once fully grown it evolves into an adult by using a various number of wood, stone, and magic elements collected at random as you play. I have found the randomness and relative infrequency of these rare items have made collection difficult. My first run-thru I kept getting many different eggs but I could never obtain one of the three elements I needed to evolve the different pets into adults. My second run-thru I’m overloaded with elements but never seem to find any eggs. It doesn’t matter much because once hatched they don’t serve any purpose or provide any help or powerups. It’s odd considering the difficulty obtaining these rare items. It’s rather like someone handing you a worthless baseball card because you’ve played a lot of solitaire.

Undoubtedly this is a fun game and a recommended download for solitaire fans but I keep feeling this game could have been a five-star title with just a few improvements. More story between levels and more rewards and powerups for all the solitaire you will ultimately need to play to finish this game would have made it easier for me to give Faerie Solitaire a high recommendation. In its current form I fear some will become bored with the repetitiveness. All the pets and powerups don’t change the fact that you’re just turning cards over and over again. Five stars for solitaire fans, three stars for everyone else.

I just finished this game (which is one reason for 5 stars–it has an end!), and will miss playing it. I played in “normal” mode, which is challenging but doable. I had to repeat 2 levels, but got them the second time around. I didn’t get the whole deal with the strange animals that evolve….didn’t seem to be any point to it. I recommend this game if you are a solitaire fan. Once you have met the goals of each level, you can play just for fun (and for the money, so you can buy helpful add-ons). Very relaxing game.
