An Affordable & Quality Handheld Sega Genesis, November 22, 2012

Like the other reviewers, I picked this up for $25 at Dollar General. Not knowing what its quality would be like, as the cardboard box was very lightweight, I picked up two of these units. Luckily, and to my surprise, I opened up one of them and was really surprised with the build quality. I’ve used other devices like this, though none of those devices felt as durably constructed as this one. This is an excellent little handheld for the price.

As far as the hardware goes, the buttons feel tight and the d-pad feels really good (not too squishy, not too stiff, just right). The housing also feels like a pretty durable plastic. It’s shockingly solid from a build quality perspective, which I wasn’t expecting given my history with these sorta devices. In addition, unlike some previous models, this includes a rechargeable battery and a USB cable to charge it.

On the games front, this handheld comes packed with 40 Sega/Capcom games and 40 throwaway plug-and-play style junk games. However, this isn’t its selling point. The selling point is the SD slot on top, which allows you to download games online and play them. It’s like a Nomad with a backlit screen and a smaller barrier to entry in terms of hardware and software.

If you’re on a tight budget and want a lot of bang for your gaming buck, this handheld’s exactly what you’re looking for.

The best handheld Genesis yet, but lacking in a few areas, January 15, 2013

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

I bought this handheld because I simply wanted a portable Genesis that didn’t cost as much as the Sega Nomad. It certainly delivers for my wants, but generally speaking it lacks in a couple of areas. For one, the audio is off pitch. I probably wouldn’t have noticed if I didn’t know the songs. After looking up multiple reviews to see why I believe the answer is that they haven’t been able to perfect portable hardware (for cheap enough) that can emulate the Genesis’s audio system. That is forgivable, but what isn’t is the inability to save, or otherwise lack of savestates, seeing as it runs on an emulator called FireCore. The device runs on a cellphone battery which takes a long time to charge, and the charging cable included only plugs into USB, so if you have a usb-to-wall charger you may want to use that. The small screen is very vibrant and more than satisfactory, but it comes packaged with a sticker rather than a static-cling display overlay, so when unpackaging be careful to not leave behind the white sticker residue. I’ve yet to test SD card support, as I attempted to use an SDHC card which is not compatible with it. While it has AV support, no cable is provided, so if you want to plug into your tv you’ll have to pick one up.
